Fencing FAQs
Level and straight are not the same thing. We prefer to follow the ground contour, keeping the top of the fence as straight as the terrain will allow. It looks best installed that way. If you prefer level the panels can be stepped.
Every municipality has its own Building Code. You are responsible for making sure that the proposed fence complies with the local Building Code. You are also responsible for obtaining fence building permits and any applicable permit fees.
We insist that you meet with our foreman before we begin work and remain easily accessible for the duration of the fence installation, preferably on site. Issues will arise during fence installation, they always do. You will make the best decision if you can see the problem.
Post depth is critical to wood fences. Shallow posts will cause the fence to lean, which looks awful and can be dangerous. Our pricing assumes that our augers can dig to the required depth with minimal hand digging. If our crew has a problem digging, the foreman will stop immediately and show you the problem. Any extra charge must be agreed to before the extra labor is begun.
Fence gateposts can require the added strength of a concrete footer; however, placing a wooden post in a concrete footer will trap moisture by restricting drainage, and the post rots at ground level. We tamp alternating layers of backfill and dry concrete mix. The result is a tight footer around the post that will allow drainage.
Generally, the municipalities in this area limit the height of residential fences to 6’ high in the back of the house and 4’ high in the front. Our fencing estimator will recommend that you check with the local Zoning Department if he suspects a problem. We are not responsible for zoning violations.
Most of our standard aluminum fence sections can follow the contour of the ground. This is called either raking or racking. The fences drop about one foot over the 6′ length of a section. If a greater slope is needed, sections can be specially fabricated as “double-punched sections” to traverse a 45 degree angle. Not all styles can be raked so stepping is required.
To fasten a post onto a concrete slab, we recommend that you core-drill the concrete if at all possible. We do offer deck mount castings, however, they should not be used on fences over 48″ tall.
NO! Our fences are not designed to be used as railings and we will not warrant their use as a railing.

Landscaping FAQs
Landscaping takes part in cycles throughout the year. Generally, spring is the best time for prepping and planting flower beds, and beginning hardscaping projects. The summer construction season is when the majority of large landscaping and hardscaping projects are done. Fall is then a great time for planting trees and bushes since temperatures are lower. Hardscaping also continues through the fall until the ground freezes or it begins to snow.
One example is of a past project that began in late summer. All the hardscaping work including the patio, sittings walls, and fireplace were built, and trees and shrubs were planted as well. Then the following spring is when we got the perennial and annual plants in the ground, as they thrive in the spring.
To ensure your project gets done in the desired time frame, start contacting landscaping companies during the winter months. It’s much better to get on their schedule before spring when their season starts than calling in late summer when crews may be booked out to the end of the season.
Modern landscaping refers to the designing, planning, and construction of gardens and other features that both create useable space for outdoor activities, and enhance the appearance around a home. Landscaping includes hardscaping and softscaping, although many people refer to them as softscaping and landscaping interchangeably. Hardscaping would be the aspect that includes non-organic materials such as stone and woodwork, retaining walls, decks, firepits, and more. Softscaping would then refer to planting designs, creating burms and grading, and mulching.
Aeration should take place during high growth periods. This is typically during the cooler times of the year when there’s plenty of rain, mainly the spring and fall. Aeration puts stress on the turf, which could be detrimental when the turf is highly stressed already due to high heat and periods of drought. At Capital Landscaping, we recommend fall aeration with overseeding to loosen the soil and develop new growth at the same time. Aeration is great for any lawn, but especially if it gets a lot of foot traffic, is part of new construction with compact soil, or is part of thatch management/prevention program.
With a few DIY techniques
This is a tough one. The conditions that are good for plant growth are naturally good for weed growth. But, there are steps you can take to prevent weed growth early on, and remove weeds if they do appear. First of all, use a landscaping fabric in your flower beds and garden to cover the soil where you don’t want weeds to grow. Then use a weed preventer, such as Preen, to further discourage weed growth. If weeds do appear, pull the entire weed, including the root, early on to prevent it from coming back. For cracks in concrete and pavers, use a commercial herbicide to kill weeds that appear. For a more organic method, try using vinegar in a spray bottle. Be warned, herbicides, including vinegar, will kill all plants they touch, not only weeds.
The basics of watering are simple. Water immediately after planting, let the water soak into the soil, and then water again. During the first week, it’s best to continue frequent watering — either daily or every other day. Following the first week, you’ll only need to water two to three times per week depending on the weather conditions in your area.
There are many benefits, including:
It might seem too simple, but mow it whenever it looks like it’s getting too long. The specific length of time will vary based on your grass type, your area’s weather patterns, and how high you cut it. That may be multiple times per week, once a week, or every other week. Keep an eye on it and use your best judgment.

Pavers are hardscaping features that serve as flooring for patios, walkways, driveways, and more. What makes pavers unique is the ability to customize them to fit your aesthetic. We offer pavers in a wide variety of styles, shapes, and sizes. Let us help enhance your curb appeal with beautiful pavers.
Among the many benefits of pavers is their durability. We use high-quality materials and proven installation techniques to provide long-lasting results. Regardless of how frequently you gather on your pavers, you can expect them to last for 50-100 years. If something goes wrong and one or more happens to break, we can easily replace it to restore the look of your outdoor living space.
Retaining walls are critical structural supports for any yard that features a hillside or slope. They prevent erosions while also providing a proper outlet for water runoff. But aside from their practical purposes, they can also beautify your yard. We often use them to create terraces of usable land for flowers and shrubs. Our team can customize your retaining wall using concrete blocks, stone, or pavers.
We provide comprehensive residential and commercial landscaping services. Our professionals utilize a proven approach that combines several key design elements to create gorgeous gardens and yards of any size. We believe in focusing on mass, form, lines, and voids to organize outdoor spaces.
For consumers, we highly advise the use of pH-neutral products. Some products with a alkaline, such as the MB-9 may be used as long as the directions are followed precisely.
For all of your interior and exterior cleaning and maintenance, we recommend the MB product line.
